    A population of Hemileuca maia species complex was observed feeding on Menyanthes trifoliata and Betula pumila. This confirms the presence of a second population of these moths using M. trifoliata in Wisconsin, and is only the fourth known locality for such populations. This is the first report of Hemileuca feeding on B. pumila in Wisconsin. The Hemileuca populations of the Great Lakes region are discussed, and the first map of the distribution of Hemileuca in Wisconsin is provided

    Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) developmental interactions with two hybrid Populus species clones were studied in laboratory trials. Significant differences in larval performance were found between clones and within the same clone at different phenological states. No larvae were able to complete development on clone NM6. All gypsy moth larvae feeding on clone NC5271 survived when leafflush was synchronized with gypsy moth eclosion in early May. However, neonates feeding on NC5271 foliage in July experienced in- creased mortality. Weights of surviving gypsy moth larvae feeding on NC5271 foliage in May versus July were not significantly different

    On uniformly rotating fluid drops trapped between two parallel plates

    This contribution is about the dynamics of a liquid bridge between two fixed parallel plates. We consider a mathematical model and present some results from the doctoral thesis [10] of the first author. He showed that there is a Poisson bracket and a corresponding Hamiltonian, so that the model equations are in Hamiltonian form. The result generalizes previous results of Lewis et al. on the dynamics of free boundary problems for "free" liquid drops to the case of a drop between two parallel plates, including, especially the effect of capillarity and the angle of contact between the plates and the free fluid surface. Also, we prove the existence of special solutions which represent uniformly rotating fluid ridges, and we present specific stability conditions for these solutions. These results extend work of Concus and Finn [2] and Vogel [18],[19] on static capillarity problems (see also Finn [5]). Using the Hamiltonian structure of the model equations and symmetries of the solutions, the stability conditions can be derived in a systematic way. The ideas that are described will be useful for other situations involving capillarity and free boundary problems as well

    Persistent quantum interfering electron trajectories

    The emission of above-ionization-threshold harmonics results from the recombination of two electron wavepackets moving along a "short" and a "long" trajectory in the atomic continuum. Attosecond pulse train generation has so far been attributed to the short trajectory, attempted to be isolated through targeted trajectory-selective phase matching conditions. Here, we provide experimental evidence for the contribution of both trajectories to the harmonic emission, even under phase matching conditions unfavorable for the long trajectory. This is finger printed in the interference modulation of the harmonic yield as a function of the driving laser intensity. The effect is also observable in the sidebands yield resulting from the frequency mixing of the harmonics and the driving laser field, an effect with consequences in cross-correlation pulse metrology approaches.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Microscopic calculations of collective flow probing the short-range nature of the nuclear force

    Collisions between two nuclei have been modeled by numerical solution of classical approximations to the equations of motion of the constituent nucleons. For the reaction Nb(400 MeV/u)+Nb, a correlated sidewards emission of nucleons is observed. This is attributed to the repulsive short-range component of the nucleon-nucleon potential. A strong dependence of the flow angle on the impact parameter is observed, in accord with recent experimental results

    Computer program to assess impact of fatigue and fracture criteria on weight and cost of transport aircraft

    A preliminary design analysis tool for rapidly performing trade-off studies involving fatigue, fracture, static strength, weight, and cost is presented. Analysis subprograms were developed for fatigue life, crack growth life, and residual strength; and linked to a structural synthesis module which in turn was integrated into a computer program. The part definition module of a cost and weight analysis program was expanded to be compatible with the upgraded structural synthesis capability. The resultant vehicle design and evaluation program is named VDEP-2. It is an accurate and useful tool for estimating purposes at the preliminary design stage of airframe development. A sample case along with an explanation of program applications and input preparation is presented

Two novel cellular and gene therapy modalities were evaluated in xenograft models for human breast cancer. The individual and especially the combined treatments with alloreactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes and replicating retroviral vectors coding for prodrug activating enzymes followed later with nontoxic prodrug demonstrated efficacy without off-target effects
